Former UFC champion Cain Velasquez is expected to be sentenced in October after pleading ‘no contest’ to a range of charges including attempted murder stemming from a February 2022 incident.
Velasquez was arrested following an 11-mile high speed chase in which he was pursuing a vehicle containing a man named Harry Goularte, who is said to have abused a close family member of Velasquez’s. During the chase, Velasquez fired several shots from a handgun — with one person (not Goularte) struck in the arm. The injuries sustained by the victim were not life-threatening.
Velasquez will appear in court for sentencing on Friday, October 18. The 42-year-old retired fighter has arranged a plea deal with authorities which mean it is highly unlikely he will receive a life sentence. He is expected to receive a custodial sentence of an as yet unknown duration.
“This defendant [Velasquez]decided to become judge, jury, and executioner,” Santa Clara County district attorney Jeff Rosen noted in a statement, as reported by MMA Fighting.
“His actions endangered innocent bystanders, including young children and their parents who could have been injured or killed as he shot at his intended victim. We have excellent law enforcement in this county. Let them do their jobs.”
Velasquez last competed in mixed martial arts in February 2019 where he was defeated early in the first round by future heavyweight champion Francis Ngannou. He retired from the sport with four wins in official UFC heavyweight title bouts, and with a career record of 14-3.
